An example of an alter prepared to honor the dead

Day of the Dead (Dia de Muertos)

November 1, 2011 by Travel Guru · Leave a Comment

Mexicans firmly believe that the dead return each year to be with us, with love and caring, Mexicans prepare tables of offerings where flowers, food and the photo of the dead are abundant. Everything is done very special for this time of year and amazingly the 2nd of November is a national holiday, banks and businesses are closed, black glass plates adorned with traditional dishes like Mole, Tamales, Pumpkins, the special sweet bread called Pan de Muerto that is made with skulls and bones on top and candies in the shape of animales made from Sugar Cane and Caramel that originated from Spain and of course no offering would be complete without a coffin and skulls made of dulce or clay. In Mexico death has brought with it a lot of beliefs, rituals and traditions, actually and above all areas in the country in the rural and suburban areas continue as do areas metropolitan like Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and Morelia to prepare Alters of Offerings and dedicate ceremonies to … Read More

30 Days Remaining in Mexico’s Official Hurricane Season

November 1, 2011 by Travel Guru · Leave a Comment

As we are entering the last 30 days of Mexico's Official 2011 hurricane season and Hurricane Rina is just a memory the remnants of the weather from Rina and other systems continue to affect the resort areas of Cancun and the Riviera Maya. The national weather service in Mexico is reporting that Cold Front #9 has become stationary over the western part of the Caribbean and is generating unstable weather with clouds and rain across the entire Yucatan Peninsula.  This mass of air extends over the Gulf of Mexico and the eastern and central part of the country keeping temperatures below normal and bringing ice and freezing conditions to the north, central and eastern part of Mexico just like a Noreaster of "moderate" intensity with winds reaching as much as 40 mph / 60 kph around Istmo and the Gulf of Tehuatepec with elevated tides to 7 feet above normal along the south of the Gulf of Mexico, North and West of the Yucatan Peninsula. A new cold front will begin to cross into … Read More

To Cancel or Not To Cancel that is a good Question!

September 13, 2010 by Travel Guru · Leave a Comment

Frequently I get e-mails from visitors to the different websites or forums that I write for or moderate asking the question; Should I cancel my trip? Most of the time these questions are related to weather that may or may not enter an area, reports of rain or windy conditions and even in the past 16 months related to the Influenza outbreak that was invented by someone to create a crisis and of course the well promoted drug wars going on in the border states. First the influenza that killed last years summer, fall and part of the winter tourism was a media fantasy.  More people die each year from the regular flu than from the H1N1 that everyone was chattering about last year. Next the Drug War, the way the US Press and International Press is portraying things is people are being gunned down on the street for no reason and one reporter likened the condition in Mexico to Afghanastan.  My god another fantasy devised to keep tourists at home and not traveling and spending money … Read More

INVEST 92 Cancun – Riviera Maya

August 7, 2010 by scubakevin · Leave a Comment

INVEST 92, INVEST 93, Tropical Storm Colin, Tropical Storm Estelle Weather for Mexico, Cancun and The Riviera Maya. Remember you can click on the Satellite Image to see it is Large Format. A lot of things going on in the Tropics this weekend but very little that is going to affect the Cancun and Riviera Maya area of Mexico's Caribbean.  Lets start with the System farthest from Mexico and move to the closest areas of Cancun and Riviera Maya. INVEST 93 out there more than a thousand miles from Mexico's Coast (820 miles west of Cape Verde Islands) and moving along the same track as Colin did last week so I am not that worried about it and if for some reason it did decide to begin a westward movement we wouldn't worry about it for at least a week so we will watch it for now.  Conditions are slightly favorable for slow development of this system. TROPICAL STORM COLIN is still hanging on there moving to the north 3º seems to be NO THREAT to the United States and Much less to Mexico. … Read More
