Cancun and Riviera Maya Weather for Monday August 30, 2010 including Puerto Morelos, Playa Del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Tulum and the Islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres.
Weather Discussion:
A Beautiful Sunday Morning here in Playa Del Carmen, I have to wash the car today for sure, lots of guests coming in tomorrow and can’t pick them up at the airport in a dirty car. Not alot of new stuff to discuss but lets get to it so I can get pending things done.
Hurricane Earl was upgraded to a Category 3 Hurricane, a Major Hurricane with sustained winds of 125 mph / 200 kph and continues to move to the West Northwest. As you remember yesterday Hurricane Earl was barreling west at a 18 mph and we expected a slight turn to the Northwest which Earl is beginning to take. Current movement is 285º and yesterday we were at 270 in the morning and 275º in the evening. The bad news is that Earl continues to gain strength and today or tonight should upgrade again to a Category 4 Hurricane as conditions in the Atlantic are perfect for development.
Warnings and Watches:
There are hurricane warnings for the Islands of Culebra and Vieques, the government of Antigua and Barbuda have downgraded to a Tropical Storm Warning for Antigua, Barbuda, Monserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis.
There is a Tropical Storm WATCH for the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Hurricane Warnings continue for Anguilla, St. Martin, St. Barthelemy, St. Maarten, Saba, St. Eustatius, The British Virgin Islands, US Virgin Islands and as mentioned above Culebra and Vieques.
Hurricane Watches are in effect for the rest of Puerto Rico.
You can follow all of the local volunteer weather folks and reporters on Storm Carib who while they have access to Internet post updates during and after the Tropical Events including some photos.
Tropical Storm Earl is Currently of NO THREAT to Mexico.
INVEST 97L Continues to be an INTENSE Tropical Wave that has very organized clouds, showers and thundershowers associated with it and Conditions are Excellent for development of this system. Wind speeds of 25 mph / 40 kph down slightly from yesterdays winds of 30 mph / 48kph but conditions are EXCELLENT for this system to become the future Tropical Storm Fiona. Models altough at this point very inaccurate show that this system should follow along the same path as Earl and could have a major affect on the Northern Leeward Islands and as well as the Islands mentioned in the Watches and Warnings for Earl. We will keep a close eye on this system for changes.
Hurricane Danielle is still out there moving Northeast and hitting colder waters and losing force. I guess I need to mention that Hurricane Danielle is of NO THREAT to MEXICO.
On the map you can see the current position of Hurricane Earl on top of the Northern Leeward Islands continuing to move West Northwest (slightly more Northwest today) although slightly turning more towards the Northwest 285º today as opposed to 270º yesterday. here in the Southeast Caribbean around Jamaica we have some very disorganized clouds and showers moving to the west towards the Central America Coast. All that colorful stuff yesterday is dumping some heavy rain in Central America including Belize and parts of the Southeast of Mexico like Campeche, Chiapas and Southern Quintana Roo. In the Central, South and Southeast of Mexico we have unstable conditions and a low pressure area the result of those yellow lines you see there that are Low Pressure Troughs through the central and western part of Mexico Bringing Unstable Conditions to the areas of Central Mexico, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Tabasco and Northern Chiapas. There is a Low Pressure area in the Pacific just off the Coast of Chiapas which is causing Showers and Thundershowers in that area and could bring more rain to an already soaked region. That low pressure is moving west but will turn more north today and move along hugging the Pacific Coast of Mexico until at least Thursday.
Here in Cancun and The Riviera Maya we have partly cloudy skies and we could enjoy mostly sunny skies. We have a chance of scattered late evening showers. Most of the day there will be a nice breeze blowing thanks to that cold front that isn’t really lingering but its affects are. The conditions in the Caribbean are NOT FAVORABLE for development.
Other than a blob of weather off the Florida Panhandle moving East??? there is nothing in teh Gulf of Mexico at this time. The conditions in the Gulf of Mexico are NOT FAVORABLE for development.

Meanwhile if you are in Cancun, The Riviera Maya or the Islands here be sure you get the sunblock on whether you are laying on the Beach, doing a tour or just walking around getting oriented, the sun will be behind clouds from time to time today making you think you don’t need sunblock but you DO. Make sure you hydrate, drink lots of water, and if you are at the pool or on the beach stagger between those beers and cocktails a nice bottle of water. Don’t take the sun for granted, enjoy your vacations.
