Cancun & Riviera Maya Weather Update June 14, 2010

Today all along the northern caribbean coast from Tulum to Cancun and further north we enjoyed a beautiful day with temperatures topping out at 88° F humidity 85% making it feel like 99°F away from the ocean.

This photo was taken at 4Pm on the beach in Playa Del Carmen at Calle 8 and you can see that it was indeed a beautiful day.

However the reason for the afternoon update is that  tropical wave #5 has intensified to a low pressure of 1011 hPa over the Gulf of Tehuantepec, in 14 ° N and 95 ° W, 205 km south of Huatulco, Oax. The system is generating  a wide area of instability in the south east of Mexico, which interacts with another area of instability in the Southern Gulf of Mexico, promoting the potential of intense heavy rain with electrical activity, hail and gusty winds in the South and southeast of the territory and the Yucatan Peninsula which of course includes Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Playa Del Carmen, Cozumel and the Riviera Maya from Playa Del Carmen to Tulum. Looking at the satellite images and local radar it is clear that this convection that is going to affect the area is quite to the south of The Riviera Maya but none the less I wanted to update you on the chance that this could slide a little north and bring some unstable weather to the area.

You can see from this image that there is a large area of disturbed weather from TW 5 on the pacific coast of Oaxaca and Chiapas pulling from the Gulf of Mexico causing severe weather around the Yucatan Peninsula.  If you look carefully the area that is NOT affected is our area of the Riviera Maya from North of Cancun to Punta Allen including the islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. We hope that the steering winds we are experiencing continue to keep this area of strong convection away from us allowing you to enjoy this week here rain free but mother nature does like to throw us some surprises.
