Riviera Maya & Cancun Weather June 15,2010

Well we are at hump day for the Month of June and the first month of the Official 2010 Hurricane Season without incident here in the Caribbean. Yesterdays 92L becomes todays IVEST 92 out there in the Tropical Atlantic still hanging on for possible development in the next day or two.  Most models have 92L taking a more northerly course and missing the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and not entering the Caribbean, actually only one named storm in history actually developed that far out (midway between West Africa and the Lesser Antilles and that was Tropical Storm Ana back in 1979 and ironically TS Ana became a Tropical Depression on June 19th 1979 and petered out  after crossing the Lesser Antilles just 5 days after becoming a tropical depression.

Why should we worry about 92L?  Sea Surface Temperatures right now where Invest 92 is located are very high, actually right now the current sea temperatures are at the same level as last years HIGHEST point.  So not only does that favor development but imagine we have 2 or 3 more months of water warming to go before the sea surface temps max out.

Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Cozumel and the Riviera Maya from Playa to Tulum.

Since Tropical Wave 6 is staying quite to the south and moving west currently off the coasts of Costa Rica and Honduras it will affect the areas south of the Riviera Maya and Costa Maya in Mexico on the Caribbean Coast.  The areas most affected by the TW6 will be southern Quintana Roo, Chiapas and Souther Campeche.  If you are not driving or traveling in those areas you should be fine.

Cancun to Playa Del Carmen we can expect mostly sunny skies (partly cloudy if you are a pessimist), HOT and humid with daytime temperatures in the mid 90′s F 30′s C but with humidity making it feel over 100°F during mid day.  There is a chance of showers or a thunderstorm because of convection from TW6 to the south but any rain or showers will isolated and brief.

From Playa Del Carmen south to Tulum you can expect much of the same as Cancun to Playa but maybe some more clouds and additional periods of rain or thunderstorms.  The Mexican Meteorlogical Office is calling for 60% to 80% chance of severe rain and storms but I just don’t see it after looking at all of the data and local conditions.
